It really wasn't just an idea that HP Lovecraft invented, the universe really is full of holes. I'm not just talking about the handy black holes that everyone from the Star Trek crew to Disney's Black Hole crew have flown through. Let's face it, those things may be so amazingly dense that not even light can escape them, but they are old news. What's new?
Cold spots. Nope, I'm not kidding. Space, besides being really enormous, is also famously cold, so why all the interest in cold spots? Usually, cold spots are more what paranormal investigators are looking for in haunted houses, right before all the on-screen screaming starts and the priests get called. These spots were first noticed by astronomers looking at a map of radiation left over from the Big Bang in 2004. That is, they were looking at the map in 2004, not that the Big Bang happened then, but I digress.
So what? Well, it turns out that this spot represents a structure of some kind, and at least according to the team of astronomers studying it at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, it is the largest structure mankind has ever discovered. Of course, they really can't tell you what exactly this "structure" is. Or possibly they've told us, I just can't grasp it. The current theory is that it may be a sign of "exotic physics", or the stuff that the Big Bang theory doesn't quite explain.
I'm afraid to ask any more. Honestly, once we get beyond quarks, one of my eyes starts twitching spasmodically. It's not a pretty sight, so I'll just trust that they know what they're talking about. Personally, I prefer other, less rational explanations. Perhaps they've actually found the front door to the palace where the "Cold Ones" live. Let's just hope they have the good sense not to send a probe.
Cheers,
Michelle
